July, 31st, 2010 Update from the ASAV-BOD:
The ASAV BOD had a meeting end of June to discuss the latest information Denis Atam brought back from the ISG-Delegates Meeting in Stadl-Paura. The Board of Directors were all in favor and made an unanimous decision to submit a membership application to ISG. Based on the recent changes to the ISG by-laws it is possible now that more than one association per country can become ISG member. The Board of Directors will keep the ASAV membership informed about any updates in that matter. More information about the ISG delegates meeting can be found in the Summer Edition of the 2010 ASAV Newsletter.

ASAV Awards & Performance Program:
The ASAV Registrar records any performance related information of ASAV registered horses. This practice has been in place for many years and is kept up-to-date in the ASAV registry. Performance related accomplishments will count towards ISG performance requirements for Shagya breeding stock according to the RZBO (ISG-General Rules and Studbook Regulations).
In addition ASAV gives away each year Awards to horse participating in the ASAV Award Program.

April, 17th, 2010 Message from the ASAV President Kilian Dill: Jump-Start-Program & Spring Newsletter
The ASAV-BOD would like to thank all who have participated, so far, in the 2010 Jump Start Breeding Program. Once again, the program is a success as it has managed to recover funds spent on a multi-prong international advertisement initiative. The Jump Start Program is still ongoing, so it there is still time to participate. Please check out are website and PARTICIPATE!

We anticipate the release of the Spring newsletter late next week. Within that newsletter, we have decided to place a detailed agenda for the social portion (clinics, etc.) of our National Meeting in September. January, 27th, 2010 ASAV-Newsletter:
ASAV has achieved a level of excellence in a relatively short time. As we move into 2010, we are looking for ways to be more effective and efficient with projects that need to be completed by our volunteers. Our quarterly newsletter, which in the past primarily has been compiled and published by Daunna Sellers. In the last few years, Donna Coss took over the work load.

The newsletter will now be administered by a committee, who I have recently appointed to do the job. The newsletter will have deadlines and publications dates that will be posted on the website well in advance so material can be gathered, edited, and prepared in a consistent manner. Our newsletter is being read and distributed Internationally, and ASAV is very excited about this. ASAV are striving to be the best in all areas of the Shagya world and the newsletter is representative of our efforts. It can be downloaded and printed to use as a handout for those who are interested in what we do and who we are.

All newsletter submissions and ad copy need to be sent to: newsletter@shagyaregistry.com

All pictures need to be send in jpg form. We will keep the newsletter around 16 pages. If you wish to submit an article for consideration please keep it around 1,200 words. We would also like to keep the font consistent and ask that you use aerial. All submissions need to be Word.doc friendly, in order to make our job easier.

The deadline for the April issue is March 31, 2010. We already have a interesting and almost full line-up for the upcoming April news, so get your information in soon.
Thank you, Kilian Dill, President ASAV

Both will be given at the AERC convention, which will be held in Reno, Nevada this year (end of February 2010). NATRC has nominated a winner for 2009 (Eric Nelson and his stallion Max). Because the convention will be held very shortly, we accept the nominee provided by NATRC (Congrats to Eric). For 2010, we will compile points and take ride reports within ASAV. Look for details on the ASAV web site---coming shortly.

American Shagya Arabian Verband (ASAV) annual meeting. Every year ASAV has an annual meeting in the eastern or the western United States. The meeting contains clinics, exhibits, demonstrations and invited speakers; some of these speakers are from outside of North America. This year Dr. Maren Engelhardt of east Prussia (Trakehners International) was kind enough to accept our invitation and provide the plenary lecture. A video of the annual meeting is posted on the ASAV web site and can be viewed at:

June, 29th, 2009 As many of our ASAV members can attest to the Shagya breed blends well with many of the other breeds. The Shagya is indeed seen as the “Great Improver” by many. At the ASAV convention this year Dr. Maren Engelhardt gave us a wonderful overview of how influential the Shagya blood has been for years in the TK breeding program. And she listed a great many of the top performance TK’s who have benefited and excelled in their sports from our blood lines. More and more our breed is being appreciated by breeders on the warm blood side.

It makes sense then that Shagya breeders partner up or support breed organizations such as the American Warmblood Society who understand the value of high quality cross bred horses. In that light ASAV wants to make our members aware of an AWS Warmblood Inspection being held Sept 12 at Karen Bish’s, Hawkview Ranch in Bend, Oregon. As stated on their web site “The AWS is an international non-profit performance/Breed registry whose only goal and purpose is to represent, promote, award and aid in the development of talented sport horses of all bloodlines from the grass roots through the Olympic levels”.

Details about the inspection criteria appear on the AWS web site. The AWS focuses on an educational format at their inspections so this will also be a learning experience. The horses are not judged to a breed specific criteria but rather to desirable conformation and desirable movement criteria. Several Shagya’s will be presented. If you’d like more information see the AWS web site or contact Karen Bish at (541) 388-1410 for details or inspection entries.
June, 25th, 2009 The ASAV 2009 Challenge Cup Endurance Race (50 miles) will be held on September 19th in Brothers, Oregon. We will piggyback onto the Oregon-100/PAC North Fundraiser (AERC)---12/25/50/75 Elevator. ASAV will provide food at the morning of the
awards.
The ride manager is Carol Giles/Charleen Farrell of Prineville, Oregon. Charleen can be reached at 541-419-5722. All AERC ride fees apply.
Note that to compete for the cup, Shagya owner(s) must be a member (s) of ASAV and the horse must be registered with ASAV. Details concerning the ride (flyer) will be published in the next newsletter and placed on our web site
June, 19th, 2009 Karen Bish has offered Hawkview ranch (Bend, Oregon) as an Inspection Site for the American Warmblood Society. The inspection is scheduled for Sept. 12th. If you wish to have your Shagya inspected for inclusion into AWS (breeding), please call Karen.

April, 26th, 2009 Update from the Youth-Program Director - Kesleigh Lehman:
I need your help in creating a buzz about Shagyas. I need all the information I can get. I need to be able to show the youth and cyber world that Shagyas are active. Here is what I need:

Photos of you and your Shagya(s), or just your Shagyas. Please include name, sire and dam, and if you were at an event, what the event was and what you placed.
Personal stories- let the world know why your Shagya shines! I want to include a "spotlight" feature every two weeks on myspace to help draw in readers. Tell a personal story of when your Shagya came through for you, in and out of the show ring; or how special it was when that little foal was born, or how your Shagya has touched someone's else's life besides yours. Let me know when you have competed and how you did. A couple of paragraphs will do. Include Photos!

Ads of Shagyas for sale if you have any. Or stallion services. I have over 700 active members on myspace, and that number grows every day! - its a great and free way to advertise.
Let your friends' kids know about the Shagya in anyway you can. I will be sending a flyer about the ASAV Youth Program soon so that you can go around and post the flyer around your local area.

February, 22th, 2009 Message from the ASAV-President Kilian Dill:
A report of the ASAV presentation at PNER is now on our web site. ASAV had a spectacular booth at the AERC meeting held in Louisville. The BOD was kind enough to donate several items to the AERC raffle, one of which was a FREE breeding. After much wrangling and trading, the winner of the breeding was an internationally renowned traveler and endurance rider Steph Teeter. ASAV president Kilian Dill presented the ASAV-Shagya high mileage award at the AERC banquet. The winner for 2008 is Monique Vincent. Our award is part of their published breeds program. Look for our articles in the AERC magazine and the Northwest Horse Source. Look for our full page advertisement in the PNER newsletter and our ad in the AERC magazine.

December, 23rd, 2008 Happy Holidays!
A Happy Holidays to all from the ASAV BOD. ASAV had hoped to provide the Shagya community with our winter newsletter before Christmas. However, it has been delayed a bit due to an overwhelming response to our 2009 Jump Start Breeding program. To date we have added 15 stallions to our list, some with multiple breedings. Thus the program will provide about 25 breedings for mare owners who desire a Shagya foal. ASAV will be offering these horses for a fee of $200 per breeding. Details will be provided in our newsletter and the ASAV web site.

ASAV has procured a promotional booth at the Pacific Northwest Endurance Riders conference (PNER), to be held in Portland, January 30 – February 1st. Look for our article and advertisement in the February issue of the AERC newsletter.

As a result we have voted to FREEZE all fees at the 2008 levels. We wish to remain the affordable and membership-friendly Shagya organization. We will still maintain our aggressive promotional effort for next year and members of the BOD (as well as others) will make a greater effort to bring in donations and grant funding.

ASAV National Meeting:
The BOD has now set the place, date and time for our 2009 National Meeting. It will take place on May 1-3 at the Hawkview Ranch www.hawkviewranch.com in Bend, Oregon. Bend is located in the Burns depression (high desert) east of the cascade Mts. In May the climate ought to be just beautiful, with views of the snow capped Three Sisters. There will be three days of clinics, events and national and international speakers and dignitaries. ASAV would like to thank Doug & Karen Bish for hosting the event.

ASAV Youth Program Welcome Letter
September 22nd, 2008 ASAV Jump Start Program:
ASAV wishes to announce their new fund raising partnership, ASAV 2009 Project Jump Start.
This is a new and innovative idea that is three fold. Firstly to support the ASAV studbook fundraising project, secondly to offer a promotional plan for stallion owners, and thirdly to increase the members benefits to further increased membership.

The old stallion auction idea has not worked for many years for horse organizations due to difficult economic times. ASAV has partnered with many of their stallion owners, who have agreed to donate a limited amount of breedings to each of their stallions to ASAV members at a significantly reduced rate of $200. The program will be available soon with a starting date to be announced in December and be open until March 1st, 2009.

Please contact Killian Dill or Darlene Steven for details to also enroll your stallion or see the next ASAV newsletter.

2009 Project Jump Start Details: The program is offered to ASAV members as a promotional plan to jump start the Shagya Arabian breeding program in North America. The ASAV Stallions enrolled in this promotional program will help to rejuvenate and invigorate a national Shagya horse breeding program and at the same time support the fund raising effort to publish a Shagya studbook in the USA. The ASAV BOD feels this is a great way to raise money and offer the top stallions in the country at a special promotional rate to our members. Truly a superb way to test breed a new bloodline combination. The ASAV stallions enrolled are being offered to ASAV mare owners in this promotion at a incredible discounted rate of $200 dollars for the 2009 season. $100 will go back to the stallion owner and $100 will go to the ASAV Studbook Publishing Fund. The fund is being established to collect money to help defray the overall costs of printing the ASAV Studbook for its members. All other expenses incurred with breeding a mare such as AI fees, boarding, veterinarian fees, collection fees, and collection transportation or shipping fees will be an extra cost to the mare owner. These additional expenses are not included in the $200 special priced stud fee. Please check with each stallion owner for anticipated fees in their area.
